Geometric

Built from straight lines and shapes. Symmetry and placement are everything.

Geometric work stands a form up out of lines and shapes. Because symmetry and spacing show plainly, accuracy matters more here than it does in a freer drawing. At Studio Goun it is most often used as a frame, or as one part of a composition.

A straight line or a circle only has to be slightly out for the eye to catch it, so more time goes in at the design stage.

The body is not flat. On a curved surface such as the arm or the calf, what you actually see differs from the design seen head-on.

So the design is laid on the body and the angle set before I pick up the needle.

Putting a plant or a symbol inside a shape — a lily in a frame, say — works well. The lines hold the drawing in place.

Subjects with clear symmetry, such as a set of scales, also suit this style.

The finer the line, the more it can spread over the years. Line weight is decided with that in mind.

Joints and fingers move a great deal and straight lines go out of true there, so I mention it when we choose the placement.

Starting small and adding elements later is possible. Nothing has to be settled whole at the outset.

If you do plan to extend it later, though, say so when we fix the first position.

I work by appointment only, in a private studio in Hongdae. Design, placement and size are settled together at the consultation.
